Kurma Meditation – The meditation of the turtle

Strength lies in tranquillity

Many peoples in Central Asia and North America believed that the earth was created on the back of a turtle, on whose back we swim through the cosmic sea. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, had a strong connection to turtles and the Chinese creator goddess created the earth from turtle legs.

In mythology, the tortoise is undeniably linked to creation.

The symbolism of the turtle – our mother earth, our protection

Sea turtles swim incredible distances in their lives, a single route to lay their eggs can be up to 7500 kilometres. Their shell is their most reliable protection. With great effort, she undertakes the journey to lay more than a hundred eggs in the womb of the earth and leave them in the care of the tides.

Hatched by the sun, the little turtles make their way to the safety of the sea. Even though many of their hatchlings are preyed upon by predators along the way, a few of their offspring always survive.

The tortoise reminds us of the cycle of “give and take”.

With great effort, it swims steadfastly on its way to give back to the earth what it once received: Life! So we too should do our utmost to give back to our Mother Earth what we have already received from her.

The tortoise teaches us how to protect ourselves: It wears its shell as a protective shield and place of retreat in case of danger. Just as she wears her armour, we can create our own armour that lets thoughtless words bounce off us and into which we can retreat when we need peace and quiet.

Turtles

In Chinese and Japanese mythology, turtles (kame 亀) are regarded as a symbol of longevity. They are therefore worshipped in various religious places and also appear in myths and legends as messengers of the gods. In Buddhism, many believers believe that each turtle contains the souls of various people who are on their way to nirvana. For this reason, it is forbidden to kill a turtle.

Kurma

This is the name of the second incarnation (a tortoise) of the Hindu god Vishnu. He previously appeared as a fish. The transformation into a turtle was considered a further development, as it could exist not only in water but also on land and also had a protective shell.

Chelone

In Greek mythology, Chelone is a virgin who was turned into a tortoise by Hermes, the messenger of the gods, because she was the only one who did not attend the wedding of Zeus and Hera out of contempt.
As punishment, she was to carry her house with her at all times. In Greek mythology, Chelone is a virgin who was turned into a tortoise by Hermes, the messenger of the gods, because she was the only one who did not attend the wedding of Zeus and Hera out of contempt.
As punishment, she was to carry her house with her at all times.

In Greek mythology, the turtle symbolises wisdom, endurance and, above all, fertility due to the fact that sea turtles lay so many eggs.
