Who holds the pregnancy record?
We have long been “pregnant” with the idea of opening a base on the mainland side of Egypt again. In April 2024, the time had come and the idea of“Lagona Divers – Hamata” was within reach. Well, it seems to be a difficult birth, because even 8 months after signing the contracts, the Hostmark Zabargad Beach Resort has not yet opened. Technical difficulties have so far prevented the reopening of the diving hotel, which has been closed for almost 10 years. Well, we are patient and are waiting for the announced opening date in April 2025, until then we will continue with the great idea of being able to offer you a typical Lagona Divers diving holiday in the Hamata area.
How long can it take? Take a look here to see how long nature has to offer for pregnancies.
The animals with the longest pregnancies
Nature is full of fascinating records, and one of the most impressive is the duration of pregnancy in various animal species. Here are some of the animals that have been pregnant the longest:
1. swamp wallaby
The swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) holds an extraordinary record: it is pregnant for practically its entire life. This marsupial from Australia has two uteruses, which means that it can conceive a new young while another is still growing in the pouch. This cycle is repeated continuously.
2. alpine salamander
The Alpine salamander (Salamandra atra) has one of the longest gestation periods among amphibians. Female Alpine salamanders are pregnant for up to four years before they give birth to their fully developed young.
3. elephants
Elephants, both African and Asian, have the longest gestation period of all mammals. Their gestation period is around 22 months. This long development period is necessary so that the elephant calves are big and strong enough to survive in the wild.
4. sharks
Some shark species, such as the Greenland shark and the Pacific sleeper shark, also have extremely long pregnancies that can last several years. These long gestation periods have not yet been fully researched, but they are another example of the amazing diversity of nature.
5. killer whales (orcas)
Killer whales have a gestation period of around 15 to 18 months. These long pregnancies allow the calves to be born well developed and ready for life in the ocean.
6. giraffes
Giraffes are pregnant for around 14 to 15 months. These long gestation periods are necessary so that the calves are big enough to stand up and walk quickly after birth, which is essential for survival in the wild.
7. Lagona Divers – Hamata
Let us be surprised!
The diversity and adaptability of nature is truly amazing. Each of these long pregnancies has developed over the course of evolution to meet the specific needs and challenges of each species.
But one thing is certain:“Good things take time!“
