When an online deal turns into diving holiday stress

Package holidays for divers: Why travel agencies will be back in vogue in 2026 – and what that means for your holiday in Egypt

Want to dive in Dahab, enjoy the Red Sea, explore wrecks or finally get your SSI Open Water certification? So quickly go to Booking, search for flights on any comparison site, click on a hotel directly with the provider, improvise a transfer – and your diving holiday is ready. Right?

Not quite. Because what looks like a bargain on the screen often ends in disappointment on site: no space on the dive boat, no rental equipment reservation, accommodation 2 km away from the Dahab house reef. Then there’s the diving case, which the airline suddenly charges separately as “sports equipment”. Or the transfer to the hotel that doesn’t want to take the second suitcase.

More and more divers are realising that package deals are worthwhile, especially when everything comes from a single source.

Travel agencies are making a comeback – and divers are at the forefront

According to the German Travel Association, more people will be booking through travel agencies than online again by 2026. Why? Because travel agencies not only provide advice, but also come to the rescue when things go wrong.

This is particularly valuable for divers: flight cancellations, delayed transfers, sudden changes to entry requirements – those who have booked individually are often left to fend for themselves. Those who have booked through a travel agency or a specialised diving tour operator such as Lagona Travel receive professional assistance, a travel insurance certificate included, and even direct rebooking assistance in an emergency.

Important to know: Many diving tour operators now perform similar functions to traditional travel agencies – especially in the specialist segment. Numerous diving shops in Germany now also offer their own travel advice or package deals – often in cooperation with tour operators such as ourselves. This development shows that specialist knowledge beats volume sales.

What’s more, the price is the same – whether you book online or at a travel agency. So why do it yourself when professionals can do it for you? And what if that’s not the case? The price difference is probably only equivalent to the cost of one dive. That could be worth it – if your entire diving holiday is at stake.

What makes a package holiday so special for divers

A diving holiday is not a beach holiday. It’s about much more than that:

  • Diving luggage handling & registration with the airline
  • Coordinated flight times (keyword: no flying after diving)
  • Transfers to the diving centre
  • Advance booking of dives & courses
  • Accommodation close to the diving spot (not “somewhere by the sea”)

Package holidays for divers not only save you money, but also stress. And if something does come up? Then your travel insurance will cover it – and Lagona will help you with the paperwork. Best of all, because your diving package is part of the package holiday, it is usually automatically included in the insurance – without the usual hassle of individual invoices and special forms. It couldn’t be easier.

Christian’s view on Google bookings

“Anyone who believes Google will find the best diving hotel also believes Facebook tells the truth. You might as well ask Trump about the Epstein files.” – Christian, CEO of Lagona Travel, likes to get straight to the point. Sure, everything looks great online. But the reality? Often not so much.

And if something does go wrong, a chatbot won’t help you. We will.

AI queries and reality: two examples from everyday life

Since AI tools such as ChatGPT have become more popular, we at Lagona Divers regularly receive amusing – and sometimes absurd – enquiries. They often appear as if they have been copied directly from the chat – including all emojis and perfect capitalisation. Two of our highlights:

1. Enquiry about mountain lake diving
Unforgettable: a user asked us if he could take a special course in mountain lake diving with us in Dahab. Sure – we’ll just unpack our mountains, fill the Blue Hole with fresh water and put a few trout in it. Spoiler: we’re right on the Red Sea. No mountains. No fresh water. No mountain lakes far and wide.

2. Brother Islands from Dahab?
Also nice: a request asking whether day trips to the Brother Islands could be made from our base in Dahab. For those who are geographically precise: the Brother Islands are a good 500 kilometres south – in the middle of the sea. Day trip? Sure – if you arrive by jet. Or own a submarine. Spoiler: it’s not possible.

We love AI – we really do. But we love it even more when divers are well advised and don’t stand on a rock in Dahab with Google Maps, ChatGPT and diving dreams in their luggage.

3. Diving package instead of course – the main thing is that it’s cheap?
Another example from real life: while working with a large tour operator, we received a booking for a 5-day diving package. Once we arrived on site, it turned out that the customer did not have a diving licence. When asked, he explained that he had booked online – and that the 5-day diving package was simply cheaper than an open water course. Advice from a diving school or travel agency would definitely have helped here. So we had to improvise – for the customer, who was basically still a beginner diver, and for the group, who were actually expecting certified divers.

Conclusion: Book your next diving holiday wisely

Blood is thicker than water – and sometimes it is also a better fuel for genuine intelligence than electricity.

Whether it’s an SSI diving course, a diving safari or a diving holiday in Dahab: 2026 will be the year of safe, stress-free diving trips. And they don’t start with a link – they start with a conversation.
