Mega deals in diving: What does the Head takeover of Aqualung mean for us divers?

A lot has happened in the diving market in recent years. Large companies are swallowing up smaller brands and groups are joining forces. The most recent example: the Head Group – known from the ski and tennis sector – has now taken over the traditional brand Aqualung. This means that Aqualung, Apeks and Aquasphere will in future belong to the same company as Mares, SSI and even rEvo rebreathers. A mega-merger that brings with it many opportunities, but also a few question marks.

SSI: A prime example of a success story

However, a look back shows that such takeovers can have extremely positive effects. When Head bought the training organisation SSI (Scuba Schools International) in 2014, many were initially sceptical. But today we know that SSI has become one of the most innovative, modern and, above all, best-networked training providers in the world.

New digital tools, modern learning materials, first-class instructor support and global standards that are truly effective worldwide – we owe all of this to Head’s investments and network. For us divers, this means better training, more choice of courses and consistently high quality, whether in Dahab, Hamata or the Philippines.

What are the benefits of the Aqualung takeover?

Now this could also happen at Aqualung. The brand has recently been in a somewhat shaky economic position. Head has now brought in fresh capital, expertise and a global network. This could ensure that Aqualung becomes stronger again – in research, product development and service.

It’s also nice for us divers to have big names like Mares, Aqualung and Apeks under one roof. Spare parts, warranties and service could be even better synchronised in the future. For diving centres like us at Lagona Divers in particular, this is worth its weight in gold because it means we can provide you with high-quality equipment even more reliably.

Are there any downsides?

Of course, you have to observe this a little. Fewer independent brands could also mean less variety at some point. But so far Head has shown that it respects the independence of its brands. Mares remains Mares, SSI remains SSI – why should Aqualung be any different?

Our conclusion with Lagona Divers

We are excited and optimistic. If Head treats Aqualung with the same care as SSI, then we can all look forward to exciting innovations, solid quality and even better global service. In any case, with Jacopo Montefusco as CEO, we have felt well advised and looked after by Aqualung Egypt for decades. He has already assured us that this will not change.

And for you as a diver this means: more fun under water, no matter where you are diving with us!
