Why diving makes you happy may begin with something as simple as colour. A particular shade somewhere between azure, turquoise and deep blue can transport us in an instant. Everyday life suddenly feels a little further away. We can almost hear the waves, smell salt in the air and remember our last escape to the sea. Research into colour and memory suggests that our brains connect certain shades of blue with calm, freedom and positive experiences. Sometimes, a brief visual cue is all it takes to bring those feelings back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For divers, however, that is only the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spend enough time underwater and blue stops being merely a colour. It becomes a feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a drop-off, the colour gradually shifts towards cobalt before fading into the open sea. It is a progression no camera can ever quite capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily life constantly competes for our attention. Messages, emails, social media, appointments and responsibilities arrive in a seemingly endless stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Underwater, that simply does not work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your phone stays on shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conversation falls silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your attention settles naturally on what is around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your breathing slows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many divers describe the experience as a form of meditation. Not because they set out to meditate, but because the underwater world gently demands their full attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That may be one of diving\u2019s greatest attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is remarkably difficult to worry about the office while watching a school of fusiliers sweep across the reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mind gets a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because you force it to switch off, but because the underwater world becomes more important than the noise you left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A first dive in Dahab often brings a small moment of revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The famous blue of the Red Sea is not one colour at all. It is made up of countless different shades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between those shades, glassfish, butterflyfish and bannerfish drift above colourful corals. Sunbeams break through the surface and create shafts of light that change from one minute to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are few places where sunlight and water perform together so beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why every dive feels slightly different, even at a site you have visited dozens of times before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the real secret of diving is not depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps it is distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not distance measured in metres, but distance from everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While traffic, deadlines and obligations wait above the surface, underwater there is only the next breath, the reef and the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many of our guests say that after only a few days of diving they sleep more deeply, feel calmer and find it easier to clear their heads. Diving is not a substitute for therapy, of course. What it can offer is a space in which the brain no longer needs to process a constant stream of demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes, that space is exactly what we need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Photographs of the sea can awaken a powerful sense of longing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Videos can show spectacular coral reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But they remain two-dimensional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only underwater does an image become a complete experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You no longer look at the blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You enter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone who has floated through the clear waters of the Red Sea and watched sunlight disappear slowly into the depths will understand why divers return again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not for one particular dive site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not for a spectacular photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They return for a feeling that is surprisingly difficult to put into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You have to experience it for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
