ITC Overview
SSI Assistant Instructors and SSI Open Water Instructors are the backbone of the diving industry as they teach new divers how to safely explore the underwater world. They offer introductory courses for those interested in diving, but also teach continuing education programmes and can create lifelong and enthusiastic divers. The SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) provides you with the knowledge and training you need to organise and run these diving courses. It is also designed to prepare you to successfully complete an Instructor Evaluation.
To take part in the SSI Instructor Training Course, you must fulfil the following requirements:
Minimum age: 18 years old.
You must have completed at least 75 open water dives totalling 50 hours or more (60 dives totalling 40 hours for the SSI Assistant Instructor)
Hold the following SSI certifications or equivalent certifications from a recognized training organization (optional for SSI AI):
- Enriched Air Nitrox 40.

The SSI Instructor Training Course is scheduled for 10 days, with an additional 2 days for the Instructor Evaluation. Before attending the SSI Instructor Training Course, it is necessary to create a profile with SSI if you have not already done so. Once you have been assigned your digital kit, you can immediately start completing the required sections of the digital learning material. You must achieve at least 90% of the points in the exam sections and pass the final exam for the instructor course with 100%.
The SSI Instructor Training Course is a mixture of academic and practical applications in the classroom, pool and open water.

Assistant Instructor Training Course
During the first 5 days of the SSI Instructor Training Course, you will work through all the necessary sections to become a certified SSI Assistant Instructor:
- Section 1: Overview of SSI
- Section 2: Duties of an SSI Professional
- Section 3: Programme Management
- Section 4: Academic Sessions
- Section 5: In-water training
- Section 6: Assistant Instructor Programme
As an Assistant Instructor with active status, you can teach the following programmes and issue recognition or certification cards (in addition to the programmes taught by professional SSI Divemaster with active status):
- Try Scuba
- Scuba Skills Update
- Perfect Buoyancy
In addition to the duties performed by an SSI Divemaster, Assistant Instructors in active status may also:
Under the indirect supervision of an Open Water Instructor with active status, teach the academic portion of the Open Water Diver programme and pool and confined water instruction (with the exception of emergency ascent skills). Under the indirect supervision of an Open Water Instructor with active status, directly supervise and evaluate surface skills during training dives for the Open Water Diver programme.

Instructor Training Course
If you decide to go all the way to take the SSI Instructor Evaluation, you can proceed directly to the next 5 days, which cover the following sections:
- Section 7: The Open Water Diver Programme
- Section 8: Open Water Specialties
- Section 9: Stress & Rescue and Dive Guide
- Section 10: The Business of Diving
You must fulfil the following requirements to complete the SSI Instructor Training Course:
- At least 100 open water dives totalling 65 hours or more (75 dives/60 hours for the SSI AITC).
- Read and complete all sections of the Instructor Training Course digital learning (sections 1-6 for the SSI AITC), including reviews and assessments.
- Complete all academic sessions as outlined in the Instructor Manual for the Instructor Training Course (Sections 1-6 for SSI AITC).
- Complete the final examination of the programme.
- Complete the candidate assessment of water fitness as described in the SSI Training Standards if more than six months have elapsed since the candidate was assessed.
- Pass all requirements and assessments for Practical Application Units 1-7 as outlined in the Instructor Manual for the SSI Instructor Training Course.
Instructor Evaluation
After successfully completing the SSI Instructor Training Course you are ready for the final step on the way to becoming an SSI Instructor – the SSI Instructor Evaluation! During these two days you will demonstrate your skills and teaching abilities to an independent, third SSI Instructor Certifier.
Parts of the evaluation are the written Open Water Instructor final exam, in-water skills presentations, classroom and in-water presentations for teaching confined, open water and speciality programmes, and rescue skills demonstrations. Other parts include assessing your knowledge of SSI’s training system and your overall professionalism.

Remember that everything you need to know you have learnt during the SSI Instructor Training Course, so the Instructor Evaluation is simply a practical test of your training. Once you’ve reached this final step, you’ll be certified as an SSI Open Water Instructor and ready to start an exciting new chapter in your life!

Additional options
If you would like to continue your training after the SSI Instructor Training Course, we offer you two additional options to increase your chances finding a Job and expand your range.
Expand your skills by taking part in the React Right Instructor course. This additional qualification enables you to train students in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED use and oxygen supply. This enables you to offer your students the opportunity to fulfil all the requirements for Stress and Rescue.
In addition, we offer the Divemaster Instructor preparation, which includes the Specialty Instructor training for Deep Diver, Navigation and Night and Limited Visibility Diver. It is a great advantage if you can teach these courses, as they are very often requested by customers and they need them to become a Divemaster. These speciality instructor levels are also a prerequisite for the Divemaster Instructor recognition level.

In addition to the courses that an Open Water Instructor can teach, you will be authorised to offer the following courses:
- First Aid and CPR
- AED Provider
- Oxygen Provider
Option 2 Divemaster Instructor preparation as part of the ITC
In addition to the courses that an Open Water Instructor can teach, you will be authorised to offer the following courses:
- Deep Diving
- Navigation
- Night and Limited Visibilty
After successfully training 25 students, you will be awarded the Divemaster Instructor recognition level by SSI.
